WELCOME TO NBCMI ONLINE TESTING FOR YOUR ORAL EXAM!

Please be aware of the following deadlines when scheduling your exams: 

  • If you passed the written exam in 2019, it will expire on December 31st, 2021. You will either need to pay a $35.00 re-registration fee and take the oral exam this year or apply for Hub-CMI.
  • If you passed the written exam during or before 2018, your written exam has expired. You will need to pay the $35 fee and retake the written exam. Please contact your program advisor or [email protected]

You will take your oral exam online through ProctorU, a live online proctoring service. ProctorU is available 24/7,and you may schedule once you receive an invitation. Please note ProctorU does not collect the testing fees on our behalf. 

In Order to Test, You Will Need:

  1. A high-speed internet connection
  2. If working on a corporate device, please check with your IT Department.
  3. The most up to date version of Chrome or Firefox
  4. A webcam (internal or external) and headset
  5. Windows or Apple operating system

  6. Get prepared by taking the practice exam.
    Take the NBCMI practice test:

    Go to the testing site: https://hosted.owlts.com and log in using the following username and password:
    username: practicetest
    password: practicetest

    *Be sure to logout of the practice test and clear the browser history after you take the practice test.
  7. A government issued photo ID that matches the name you registered with

Your Testing Environment Requirements:

  1. A quiet, well- lit, area away from other people
  2. The workspace area needs to be free of any materials not allowed on the exam.
  3. It's required to use a hard surface for a workspace rather than a bed or couch.

How to Schedule Your Exam:

  1. Please contact your program advisor and let her know you would like to test with ProctorU
  2. She will respond and send you a payment link for $275: Please click HERE to pay for your exam
  3. Once you make your payment let your program advisor know and she will send you an invitation to schedule your exam.  
  4. Select "Sign Up" in the upper right-hand corner.
  5. Select "Test-Taker" and fill out the needed information on the following page.
  6. Once registered, you will be brought to the home page where you'll select "schedule session."
  7. Use the calendar and clock widgets to select your desired appointment date.
    1. All times are that of YOUR time zone, not the testing organization.
  8. Confirm your reservation.

    2. The exam fee is non-refundable and there is a $25 fee for rescheduling

IMPORTANT: The day before your scheduled exam, you will need to login to ProctorU and test your equipment with THIS LINK. If you run into any issues, please troubleshoot HERE. If you need further assistance, please contact ProctorU Support via the Live Chat feature in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen when you are logged in.

On the Day of the Exam:

  1. Review the "Exam Day: What to Expect" Video if needed.
  2. Be sure you are logged out of the NBCMI practice test, clear your browsing history BEFORE you log into Proctor U for your testing appointment.
  3. Make sure you are logged into your ProctorU account prior to the time your exam is scheduled to start. This will give you time to run one more system check from your dashboard.
  4. Have your government issued ID present.
  5. Confirm your testing environment is up to the ProctorU standard.
  6. You will NOT be able to access your exam until your exam start time. On your dashboard, you will see a countdown timer.
  7. You should expect the start-up process to take approximately 10-15 minutes. THEN, you will be connected to a Proctor.
    1. Please note: This does NOT affect your allotted testing time.
    2. If you are not able to successfully login into your exam after 45 minutes please disconnect and contact your advisor. You will not be charged for tech issues or delayed start times.

Permitted Materials for Your Exam:

  1. A non-electronic (paper) dictionary and 3 sheets of blank scrap paper.

The National Board currently offers the Hub-CMI and the CMI (Certified Medical Interpreter) credentials. The Hub-CMI is a credential available to all interpreters, regardless of target language. If there's a CMI credential available in your target language, your Hub-CMI will expire in two years after you pass the written exam with no option for renewal.

The CMI (Certified Medical Interpreter) credential is offered in six languages: Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Russian, Korean, and Vietnamese. After achieving the Hub-CMI, you will be allowed 2 years to complete the oral assessment for the CMI certification.


Results: You will be notified of test results by email within 6-8 weeks. The passing scores for the oral exam for Cantonese, Korean, Russian and Spanish is 70%. The passing score for Mandarin is 80% and for Vietnamese it is 65%. Test Environment, System, and Network Issues: By accepting the use of online proctoring, you assume all risks associated with network, technical, or computer-related issues, as well as your choice of testing environment. If you fail to successfully complete the test due to those factors, you are responsible for the cost of any retakes.

Retakes: Candidates who do not pass the the oral exam may re-take the exam after a 3-month waiting period. The initial exam and re-test fees and application procedures are the same.  After 3 retakes you will be permitted 1 attempt per calendar year. You will be permitted to reapply and earn your Hub-CMI only one time after your original expiration date.   

Fees Expiration and Refunds Policies: The exam fees are non-refundable and an exam fee will expire after one year if the exam has not been taken. There will be a rescheduling fee of $25.
